The Federal Open Market Committee is meeting tomorrow to determine what the overnight interest rate on loans to banks should be. Normally when the Fed raises the Federal Funds rate their would be a corresponding rise in treasuries and then in mortgage interest rates. However, the Fed raised rates in Dec 2015 for the first time since 2006. Contrary to expectations treasury and mortgage interest rates didn’t rise! This opposite effect was the result of foreign demand for US treasuries and dollars. Other currencies like the Euro and Yen have seen even worse return than we have in the US so many holders of these currencies are buying us US treasuries. The result? The Fed raises rates and demand for treasuries still stays strong and we saw mortgage interest rates fall! So what will happen on Wednesday when the Fed announces what they will do with rates? Your guess is as good as mine.
